[spoiler] It is always sad to hear the loss of yet another Rifleman! Although I didn't really know JP his name is a legend amongst the Green Jacket Bugle Majors. My heart really goes out to his family.
So sad to hear the news of the loss of JP. The best RGJ Bugle Major! Some great memories of John taking marching displays from Buck House to a car park in Canada. - always so smat and professional. Hugs and prayers for jenny and the family. Alan and Kim
Sorry to hear about the passing of John. I shall always remember him for his wicked sense of humour, and the pratical jokes he would play on us all. He would stand behind me on parade running his stick up and down my leg trying to put me off. You will be sadly missed John, one of the best. My thoughts are with Jenny & Family at this very sad time.
the news of John powell passing a way was a shock and saddened me. He will be missed by all Green Jackets. my sympathy and condolences to Johns family forever green Del EX3 RGJ

I just cannot put into words just how devastated this news has left me my thoughts are with you Jenny and Family I feel truely Honoured to have served and known john
Johnny Powell embodied the whole essence of what a Green Jacket Bugle Major should be. He was smart as mustard, with his legendary moustache, and you knew that when the order was given - "Bugle Major, Sound the Advance" - that you were in for a quality performance.
But more than that, he was a very professional Machine Gun platoon commander; indeed the Bugle Pl 3RGJ wone the Match 83 (the SF Cup) for at least 3 years running during 3RGJ's tour in Celle 82-87.
I always enjoyed seeing him at reunions, and he never lost that sparkle.
He is a great loss to the Regiment, and someone that I will remember as an inspiration for me as a young platoon commander.
My sympathies to Jenny and the family, and I'm very sad not to be able to go to his service.
My condolences to jennie and her family.Johnny was a true gentleman and a character who has now gone to join the rest of the characters that we have lost over the years.I met up with john on a few occasions when he was head porter at pembroke college cambridge. He was always ready for a chat and a laugh. You could always hear him coming before you saw him as he had steel bits on the bottom of his shoes.May he rest in peace.Gary.
I am sorry this is late, have just heard this evening from willie mcgowan.John and I have known each other since `65`and even the children played together. What can i say, gutted, another Green Jacket has gone and left a huge void that wont be filled. We send our condolences to Jenny and the family. GOD BLESS,Jean & George Martin.
Just got the message with the sad loss of JP. I remember him well from Cyprus. He in his usual way took the mickey out of me for being an ex bugler. Who would have believed he himself would one day become a bugle major, i dont think John would at the time. Rest in Peace - you will never be forgotten
black and green, the finest colours ive ever seen,JP was one of the finest greenjacket i knew,1969 seems like yesterday,RIP JP,my deepest condolences to his family.

My sincere condolences to John's family at this deeply distressing time. He was obviously much loved, by not only his own family but by the Regimental 'Family - and it is so gratiying to see that so many members of 3 RGJ have left messages - I'm only sorry mine is a little tardy. I have very fond and memories of him in Berlin, Colchester and Celle and was sorry not to be there for his funeral, which I'm sure was a great celebration of his life. Jim
